One needs only to look at a map of the Indian Ocean to notice the remote nature of yacht charter Seychelles. This small archipelago is so far from any other piece of land that it's guaranteed to be one of the last few places on Earth that are worthy of the title of lost paradise.

The islands of Praslin, Fregate, La Digue and Mahe are make up the archipelago and offer plenty of sailing possibilities along some of the best-looking coastlines in the world. In all there are 115 islands which should provide you with enough sailing destinations on your holiday.

First discovered by Arab sailors who used them mainly as a stopping point on their cross-oceanic trips, the islands came to the attention of Europeans as late as the 1600s when both the British and the French decided they were worth fighting for. In 1814 the Brits won the islands for good and kept them under their control until 1976 when they were given their independence.

Since then tourism has played a major role in the country's economy since there are few other resources to be found here. Not only is the natural setting beautiful here, but the island's also seem to have great geographic positions from a meteorological point of view, since they are situated outside the cyclone belt, benefitting from calm waters and fair winds all year round.

Ever since yacht charter Seychelles was declared a democratic republic yachting regulations have been made much more accessible and most bans that were imposed by the socialist rule were lifted. Nowadays, the only strict rules imposed are the ones referring to protected areas such as national parks.

Entry in such areas (which also include privately owned islands) is either monitored (and taxable) or prohibited altogether. It's best to make inquiries first before planning your trip so you can make the necessary arrangements.

The main city on the islands is Mahe which is also the main port and yachting hot spot. However, Port Victoria is used as the main port of entry or exit. If arriving in a foreign boat, you'll have to contact the port authority which will run you through customs, health, immigration and security formalities.

Normally, Seychelles don't require a visa from any of their visitors, regardless of the purpose of their visit. This applies for the first month of your visit and can be extended to up to one year. What is needed though is a valid passport with at least 6 months of validity left on it.
